For Lebanon to recover, it needs a reliable leader

During Mass on Easter Sunday, Maronite Patriarch Bechara Al-Rahi stated that Lebanon needed "a trustworthy leader."

Al-Rahi went on to say that "a leader who is not trusted cannot remain in office" and that the government should not permit foreigners to utilise the nation for their own purposes.

His appeal came as Eastern Orthodox Christians in Lebanon observed Palm Sunday and Western Christians observed Easter Sunday, the most holy day in their calendar.

The election of a president, recovering sovereignty, and addressing poverty and hunger in the economically struggling nation were all topics covered in the sermons on Sunday.

During his speech, Al-Rahi posed the following question: "How long will the Lebanese land remain accessible to all gun owners? When will Lebanon and its people have to deal with the effects of the external policies that are slowly but surely choking the nation?

As tensions with Israel increased following Friday's cross-border shooting between terrorists in Lebanon and the Israel Defense Forces, sermons and allusions to sovereignty also surfaced.
