Attacks blamed to Turkiye resulted in two deaths in Iraqi Kurdistan

Authorities in northern Iraq's Kurdistan region stated Sunday that a drone strike by Turkiye was to blame for at least two deaths and two injuries.

According to one official, the truck transporting Turkish Kurdish PKK members was the target of the attacks near the Iranian border town of Penjwen.

The PKK has rear bases in northern Iraq and is categorised as a "terrorist" organisation by Ankara and its Western supporters.

Haval Abubaker, the regional governor of Sulaimaniyah, spoke by phone with Masrour Barzani, the leader of Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan region, to voice his "concern" about the "attacks."

In a statement that did not identify the victims or make reference to any connection to the PKK, Abubaker stated, "According to preliminary elements of the investigation, two people were killed and two other people were injured by these attacks."

Tens of thousands of people have died as a result of the PKK's insurgency in Turkiye since 1984, and Ankara has long held military outposts in northern Iraq from which it routinely launches operations against them.
