The US Just Canceled War Games With South Korea. Iran Is Why.
South Korea said Monday that the United States has canceled the joint amphibious landing exercise known as Ssangyong, citing constraints on force availability caused by the war in Iran. In my opinion, this is a bigger story than the one-day news cycle it's gotten so far. It's a visible sign that America's military bandwidth is being stretched thinner than Washington likes to admit.

What Was Actually Canceled
South Korean Marine Corps spokesperson Han Seung-jeon told reporters that the US Marine Corps formally notified Seoul back in June that its ability to deploy forces for this year's Ssangyong exercise would be constrained "due to the situation in the Middle East." Ssangyong, meaning "Twin Dragons," is a biennial division-level drill involving warships, aircraft, and ground forces rehearsing amphibious landings. It was scheduled for September. Both sides say they're continuing consultations about eventually rescheduling it, though no timeline has been given.
This Isn't an Isolated Decision
The cancellation follows on the heels of President Trump's order last week to scale back the separate Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises, cutting them from 11 days down to five. Trump framed that decision around cost and diplomacy, writing on Truth Social that the drills sent "a signal that was totally inappropriate and hostile" to North Korea, while emphasizing his relationship with Kim Jong-un. Trump has also reportedly questioned why the US should keep backing joint drills given Seoul's refusal to participate in the Iran war.
Two Different Explanations, One Uncomfortable Reality
Here's where I think the story gets interesting: the official reasoning for Ssangyong's cancellation is resource constraints, not diplomacy. That's a materially different explanation than the "cost and signaling" rationale used for Ulchi Freedom Shield.

US weapons stockpiles have reportedly fallen to concerning levels amid the concurrent conflicts, forcing a realignment of assets from Asia toward the Middle East. When a canceled war game is blamed on "we don't have enough forces to spare," that's not spin, that's an admission of strain.
