Erdogan Says Turkey Is Rewriting History. He Said It at the Right Place and the Right Time.
Speaking at commemorations in eastern Turkey for the 955th anniversary of the Battle of Manzikert, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan delivered what analysts are already calling one of his most assertive regional statements of the year, vowing that no provocations or traps would stop Turkey's march and declaring that "history is being rewritten in our region" with Turkey at the center of that rewriting.

The Speech and Its Setting
The venue was not accidental. Manzikert, now the Malazgirt district of Muş province, is where Seljuk Sultan Alp Arslan defeated the Byzantine army on August 26, 1071, opening Anatolia to Turkish settlement and laying the groundwork for what eventually became the Ottoman Empire. Erdogan chairs a cabinet meeting at nearby Ahlat every year before the commemoration, using the occasion to project continuity between that medieval moment and contemporary Turkish ambition. "Everyone, friend or foe, should know and understand this," he said Tuesday. "Türkiye is directing history with its conscientious, principled, and peaceful policies. No one can stop this anymore."
The Israel Dimension
The reference to provocations and traps carried a specific contemporary meaning. Turkey-Israel relations have deteriorated sharply since the Gaza war, with Turkey suspending all trade with Israel in 2024, former Israeli PM Bennett calling Turkey "the new Iran," and mutual threats escalating through 2026. Erdogan's language in MuÅŸ, those who think they can stop Turkey "through provocations and traps are doomed to disappointment," is widely read as a direct signal to Tel Aviv that Turkish regional policy will not be altered by Israeli pressure, military or diplomatic.
From Compliant Ally to Independent Power
The transformation Erdogan is describing didn't happen overnight. Through the 2000s, Turkey was a model NATO partner, hosting US nuclear weapons at Incirlik Air Base and maintaining one of the bloc's closest security relationships with Israel.

Today Turkey builds its own drones, its own frigates, its own fighter jet, and its own combat management systems, simultaneously constructing 61 warships across domestic and export orders according to the naval forces commander's latest announcement.
