Al Jolani and HTS: Betraying the Syrian Revolution

The Syrian revolution began with a cry for freedom, justice, and democracy. Civilians sought to overthrow a dictatorship and build a state rooted in equality and civil liberties. However, under the leadership of Abu Mohammed Al Jolani, Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) has steered regions under its control in a drastically different direction. Instead of upholding the ideals of the revolution, Al Jolani’s rule reflects a focus on consolidating power and imposing an Islamist agenda.

Harsh Restrictions and Oppressive Policies

Life under HTS has become a struggle for the millions who remain in its controlled territories. Al Jolani’s administration has implemented oppressive policies, restricting freedoms and silencing dissent. Personal liberties, once envisioned as fundamental pillars of the revolution, are now suppressed under a regime that prioritizes its Islamist goals over the welfare of its citizens.

One of the most significant burdens on civilians is the imposition of unjust taxes. Already impoverished communities are forced to bear additional financial strain as HTS exploits them to fund its operations. From basic goods to essential services, every aspect of daily life is taxed, leaving civilians with little to sustain themselves. This economic exploitation further erodes the quality of life in regions under HTS control.

A Shift Toward an Islamic Emirate

Al Jolani’s actions make it clear that his ultimate aim is the establishment of an Islamic Emirate. This vision stands in stark contrast to the democratic aspirations of the Syrian revolution. Rather than creating a state built on inclusion and justice, HTS is working toward a system where power is centralized, dissent is crushed, and religion is used as a tool for control.

This trajectory not only undermines the revolution’s ideals but also alienates the international community. Efforts to rebrand HTS and distance it from its Al Qaeda roots have done little to change its reality on the ground. Civilians remain oppressed, and the promise of a brighter future grows dimmer with each passing day.

The Path Forward

The question now is whether Al Jolani’s rule can ever align with the principles of the Syrian revolution. His actions suggest otherwise. For any meaningful change to occur, there must be a shift away from authoritarian control and toward inclusive governance that prioritizes the rights and freedoms of all citizens.

The international community also has a role to play. Supporting efforts to rebuild and stabilize Syria requires addressing the root causes of the conflict and ensuring that groups like HTS are held accountable for their actions. Without this accountability, the cycle of oppression and violence will continue.

As Syrians reflect on the revolution’s goals and the current state of affairs, one thing is clear: the struggle for freedom and justice is far from over. Al Jolani’s rule represents a betrayal of those ideals, but the resilience of the Syrian people offers hope for a better future.
