French, Lebanese Leaders Discuss Effort to Quell Hezbollah, Israel Clashes

Leaders of Lebanon met on Friday to talk about ways to resolve Lebanon's political impasse as well as tactics for putting an end to the continuing cross-border fighting between Israel and Hezbollah.

Lebanese Prime Minister Mikati and French President Macron discussed a French proposal meant to defuse the issue. Under this strategy, Hezbollah fighters will be withdrawn from areas within ten kilometers of the border, and support for the Lebanese army will be increased.

Mikati expressed gratitude to Macron for his efforts to restrain Israeli aggression and provide the Lebanese military with the resources and know-how it needs.

Since the Israel-Hamas conflict began in October, there has been a sharp increase in hostilities between the Israeli army and Hezbollah, which is supported by Iran. This has raised serious concerns about the stability of the region.

In addition, the absence of a new Lebanese president for more than 1.5 years, since previous President Michel Aoun's resignation, has exacerbated the country's political paralysis in the face of a severe financial crisis.

The Paris meeting highlights international attempts to reduce tensions, look for a diplomatic solution to the Israel-Hezbollah conflict, and deal with the complex political and economic issues facing Lebanon.
