Libya Releases Four Hamas Members; What To Expect?

Libya, a country in North Africa's Maghreb area, has freed four Hamas members – Marwan al-Ashqar, his son Baraa, Mouayad Abed, and Nasib Choubeir – to participate in solidarity acts in support of Hamas during the Gaza war.

Libya released four members of the Palestinian militant group Hamas on Friday. They were arrested in 2016 on suspicion of smuggling weaponry into Gaza. They were reportedly sentenced to prison terms ranging from 17 to 22 years in 2019.

According to reliable sources, they were apprehended at the request of the US. After Turkish mediation, they were released on Friday at the request of the Libyan prosecutor's office.

Following the commencement of the war on October 7, according to Israeli authorities, Hamas began pressing on Libya to release its members. Libya agreed to release the four prisoners.

Their release coincides with the conflict in the Gaza Strip between Israel and Hamas.
