Europe Does a Balancing Act With Ukraine and Israel

Much of the West, including Europe, is torn between Ukraine and Israel, both of which are at war. European politicians have visited Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, following in the footsteps of US President Joe Biden.

But Ukraine feels left out as the world's media focuses on the Israeli-Palestinian war, which has killed over 8,000 deaths, the vast majority of which have been children and women. The European Union's chiefs of state and government met in Brussels on October 26 to reassure Ukraine by confirming their support for Kyiv. Olaf Scholz, the German Chancellor, stated that Europe stands alongside Ukraine.

Galeeva argues that the Hamas-Israel conflict is impacting the discussion over a multipolar world order. It demonstrates the continuous role of external forces in the Middle East, as well as the global significance of regional entities. Western nations have been chastised for their double standards, particularly their silence on Israel's bombing of Gaza.

"These might suggest a cautious response by Arab leaders to the events in the region, but at the same time it echoes their independent voices, which are becoming louder daily and may eventually shape the composition of the multipolar world order, with important places for regional actors in the medium term."
