The vast and desolate expanse of AlUla, renowned for its mesmerizing desert vistas and historic monuments, has perpetually captivated the wanderers who traverse its ancient grounds.

Embarking on a journey of exploration, a groundbreaking study is uncovering a captivating interplay between AlUla's historical sites and the cosmos, illuminating an age-old connection between civilizations and the stars that continues to shape the region's identity to this day.

Nestled in the northwest of the Kingdom, the archaeological treasures of AlUla offer a distinct window into the profound role astronomy played in the region's past. Narratives woven by seasoned guides, alongside evidence from antiquated civilizations, divulge how the celestial expanse of the desert's night sky played an instrumental role in guiding travelers and trade caravans, facilitating navigation across the sprawling landscapes through centuries.

Majed Al-Zahoufi, a fervent guide and a devoted aficionado of astronomy, has fostered an intimate kinship with the desert. His odyssey into the realm of stars commenced nearly a decade ago, driven by unwavering curiosity and personal observations.

Al-Zahoufi shared with Arab News that his pursuit is firmly grounded in historical veracity, a path trodden by many. Drawing from an extensive reservoir of knowledge encompassing Arab history, ancient civilizations, and astronomy, he identified a recurring theme: "The various civilizations that flourished in AlUla, including the Dadans, Lihyans, Nabataeans, and Minaeans, strategically controlled pivotal global trade routes.

"Among these traversed the fabled incense routes, navigated by traders hailing from the southern Omani territories, voyaging toward the northern realms of the Arabian Peninsula. This juncture of trade fostered exchanges among diverse cultures, spanning from the Greeks and Babylonians to the Assyrians."

These venerable civilizations, situated at the crossroads of commerce, engaged in dialogues with multifarious cultures, many of whom harbored a profound fascination with the cosmos, even revering celestial bodies.

Throughout the annals of time, cultures across the globe have acknowledged the profound interplay between Earth and the heavens. Celestial entities, such as stars and luminaries, held the key to navigation, heralding seasons and shaping a myriad of cultural practices. This intricate interconnection between civilizations and the cosmos continues to be etched into the vibrant tapestry of AlUla's history. As the exploratory study delves deeper, it unfurls a narrative of how the celestial realm intertwined with human affairs, forging an enduring legacy that reverberates through the ages.
