🐍 A Discovery of Titanic Proportions
In what may be one of the most significant wildlife discoveries of the decade, scientists from the University of Queensland have confirmed the existence of a completely new anaconda species deep in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Named the northern green anaconda (Eunectes akayima), this reptile could very well be the largest snake ever documented.
Led by Professor Bryan Fry, a research team spent 10 days exploring the Baihuaeri Waorani Territory, following reports from the local Waorani people who claimed to have seen "the biggest anacondas in the world." With the help of these indigenous guides, the team paddled through swampy waters and encountered several massive anacondas lurking just beneath the surface.
📏 Bigger Than Anything Seen Before
Among their discoveries was a female snake measuring 6.3 meters (20.7 feet) in length. Locals reported even larger individuals, with some said to be up to 7.5 meters (24.6 feet) long and weighing over 500 kilograms (1,100 pounds). These findings surpass previous records, placing the newly identified species at the top of the world’s heaviest snakes, even outclassing the famous southern green anaconda.
🧬 Millions of Years in the Making
Genetic testing revealed that the northern green anaconda diverged from its southern counterpart approximately 10 million years ago. With a 5.5% genetic difference, this level of divergence is more than double the gap between humans and chimpanzees. The discovery was part of the filming of National Geographic's upcoming series Pole to Pole with Will Smith, adding global attention to the scientific breakthrough.
🌿 Threats Loom Over the Jungle Giant
While the discovery is groundbreaking, it arrives with a warning. The Amazon rainforest—home to this massive predator—is under siege. Deforestation has already affected 20-31% of the region, and projections indicate that up to 40% could disappear by 2050. Combined with climate change, wildfires, and droughts, the survival of the newly discovered anaconda species is at risk.
"It’s not just about discovering a new species," said Prof. Fry. "It’s about using that knowledge to protect it."
