After 77 days of Israeli airstrikes and bombardment in Gaza, with a civilian death toll exceeding 20,000, the United States persists in vetoing the UNSC resolution concerning the besieged territory. The US abstained from Friday's vote at the United Nations Security Council.
As a result, a resolution demanding the immediate, safe, and unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance directly to Palestinian civilians across the Gaza Strip was successfully adopted. Notably, this resolution did not include a call for a ceasefire.
While Iran welcomed resolution 2720, it deemed it insufficient to alleviate the suffering of Palestinians. Nasser Kanaani, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, acknowledged the resolution as positive but criticized it as an inadequate measure.
Kanaani underscored the US's failure in the situation, expressing regret that, after 77 days of attacks by the Zionist regime, the US government still obstructs the adoption of a binding UNSC resolution to halt the war and address the Zionist regime's alleged war crimes and genocide in Gaza.
He pointed out the challenges in sending humanitarian aid to Gaza due to ongoing Israeli bombardment, describing the Israeli regime's actions as unprecedented war crimes, resulting in the destruction of over 60 percent of houses and municipal infrastructures in Gaza.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson held the US primarily accountable for the continuation of Israeli strikes and war crimes against the Palestinian people in Gaza and the West Bank.
Israel, in response, criticized the Security Council for not condemning a Hamas attack on October 7 that reportedly killed 1,300 Israelis and resulted in 250 hostages being taken. Brett Miller, Israel's Ambassador and Deputy Representative, argued that Israel is already facilitating the daily entry of hundreds of truckloads of aid into Gaza. He emphasized Israel's willingness to significantly increase aid truck entry but insisted that Israel's security inspections would not change, asserting its right and obligation to guarantee its security.
