Syria: Israeli air 'aggression' puts Aleppo airport out of service

The Syrian defense ministry said on Monday that an 'attack' by Israeli aircraft put Aleppo international airport out of service.

A military source reportedly said, "The Israeli enemy carried out an air attack, targeting Aleppo International Airport. The aggression caused material damage to the airport's runway and put it out of service.”

The Syrian state news agency Sana said that the runway at Aleppo international airport was damaged because of an Israeli air 'aggression'. Suleiman Khalil, a Syrian transport ministry official, said that maintenance teams started the repair work.

According to the military source, Israel undertook an aerial assault from the direction of the Mediterranean, west of Latakia, at 4.30 am.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a United Kingdom-based information office that documents human rights abuses in Syria, said that Israeli airstrikes also targeted weapons depots at Nayrab military airport in Aleppo, Syria.

On the other hand, an Israeli army spokesperson said, “We do not comment on reports in the foreign media.”

According to reports and sources, flights have frequently been halted due to Israeli strikes at airports in Aleppo and the capital, Damascus.

According to the war monitor, Israeli attacks on the Aleppo region in May resulted in the deaths of four Syrian officers and three Iran-backed fighters.

The airport was out of commission twice in March due to Israeli attacks. On March 7, three persons were killed in an airstrike, and two weeks later, another strike near Aleppo airport damaged a suspected arms depot used by Iran-backed militias.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that two fighters supporting the Syrian government were killed a week ago in Israeli bombings near Damascus.

Since 2011, Syria's war has resulted in more than 500,000 deaths, millions of displaced people, and caused severe damage to the nation's industries and infrastructure.
