During his initial meeting with Israel's foreign minister, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell called on Israel to cease any "unilateral measures" that could further escalate tensions following the recent violence in Palestinian territories. The meeting took place amidst rocket attacks launched by militants from Gaza towards Israel and retaliatory fire from Israeli tanks on the Palestinian enclave, occurring shortly after the death of a Palestinian prisoner in Israeli custody who had been on a hunger strike.
The EU's foreign service stated that Borrell reiterated the European Union's plea for Israel to halt unilateral actions that could exacerbate the already heightened level of tension, thereby jeopardizing the potential for a just and sustainable peace based on a two-state solution. The statement also highlighted Borrell's condemnation of recent attacks against Israelis and emphasized the EU's recognition of Israel's right to self-defense. However, it underscored the necessity for any response to be proportionate and in accordance with international law.
Simultaneously, Borrell expressed concerns about the situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. He conveyed the EU's desire to strengthen its relationship with Israel and expressed hope for another meeting between the EU-Israel Association Council later in the year. Borrell urged the Israeli foreign minister to engage with the EU's efforts involving Saudi Arabia, the League of Arab States, and other Arab countries to revitalize peace initiatives.
Additionally, the EU's foreign service announced a scheduled meeting on Wednesday of the ad hoc liaison committee to discuss strategies for enhancing the Palestinian economy and institutions.
